I remember the first time one of my close friends became a missionary to Japan. I had always thought missionaries were “super Christians”. Made of steel and no fear. When Karen left teaching and went overseas I felt the impact of the sacrifice she made. She would never own her own home, perhaps not even own her own car, and her close family thought she was crazy. She went to a country where they call Westerners “aliens”. She would not see her friends for a long time. And she had to learn to speak all over again. The sacrifice was massive.
Karen is still in Japan 20 years later. What keeps her there? How can she stay on the mission field and stay focussed on the work of the Lord?
God upholds us through various ways. Karen obviously understands the gospel– that she is saved by the overwhelming love of God for us. Karen finds comfort in the resurrection of Christ- which means that our work in the Lord is not in vain. Karen loves Japanese people. And she also finds comfort in us!- yes us… you! Her Christian brothers and sisters who pray, write, and give financially to the work of CMS. We are integral. Absolutely integral. Let’s not forget it, or we might stop praying and loving.
Karen is not made of steel. There are times when she breaks down, feels like giving up and fails to see fruit.
My prayer is that today won’t just be “interesting” as we hear news from our missionaries. My prayer is that we will be excited, moved and challenged to be partners in mission. There are many ways we can do this. And perhaps even God is calling you to go yourself– remember, Karen is not a “super Christian”. She is just like you and me. (Andrew)
