We all appreciate our mothers very much. Colin Buchanan remembers his mother as the “engine room” of the house. He grew up, as you do, unaware of how the house functioned. Everything just seemed to happen around him, almost magically (lunches made, house cleaned, bills paid, transport organised, cupboards stocked, ‘oil of happiness’ spread around, etc, etc) until one day he discovered there was an ‘engine room’, and it was his mum!
Every mum is different. Some stay at home and work, others go out to work. But all good mums do so much for us. They teach what is good. They are great examples of godliness. Good mums are especially good encouragers. They are there when we need them, and at just the right time-they are our ‘cheer squad’! I remember lots and lots of things that I learnt from my mum- things like respect, kindness, joy, and how to make scones!
Anna Jarvis apparently started the modern Mother’s Day after the death of her mother, about 100 years ago. Later in life she regretted that she had, when she saw the rampant commercialisation of Mother’s Day. She was even against Mother’s Day cards, and said that a pretty card is no substitute for a hand-written letter.
Make sure you thank your mum today!. Help the kids make their mum feel special. You don’t have to spend lots of money on her– more powerful is a visit, a hug, lots of kind words, and helping out around the home. And give thanks to God– mums are great gifts from God. (Andrew).
