“Degrading, appalling, indefensible” were the words I heard. Malabar is Rugby League heartland and I feel I need to say something about Monday night’s Four Corner’s programme. I didn’t watch the show but have read the reports since and seen the follow-up . I’m sure it’s only the tip of the iceberg. “Simply the best” has become simply the worst.
As I’ve reflected on our media’s response I’ve noticed that they’ve taken the moral high ground, and I wonder if you’ve jumped on the band wagon. It’s so easy to join in the media finger-pointing and the moralism. Yes of course this is hideous and abominable. But remember- there we go but for the grace of God. Nothing can I boast in, but the blood of Jesus. There’s nothing to feel good about in this, for anyone.
The other thing is, when there is such damaging consequences of our actions– and apparently the woman involved has tried to kill herself, there needs to be everything done to try to help victims. This woman needs the best counselling and support money can buy. And she needs our prayers! Will you pray for her?
And please don’t tell me the game has suffered! Please! I’ve heard it so many times. Much more significantly, our society has suffered, families have suffered, wives have suffered, parents and children have suffered. What happens in the bedroom never ever just stays in the bedroom!
Finally, God has suffered. When King David committed adultery and killed Uriah he lamented, he mourned, he wailed. “Against you, you only have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight” (Ps 51:4). David rightly expressed the magnitude of the offence we cause God- “you only” he said. I haven’t heard the media or any player mention God yet– but getting right with God is the most fundamental starting point, and urgent need. Yours in prayer, Andrew.
